A daily prayer for priests and religious although is a simple thing, is one of the most charitable and noble acts.
We need to hold our priests and religious under the motherly protection of Mary. When I pray for our priests and religious, I imagine that she keeps them under her wings.
The following prayer by St Therese of Lesieux (the Little Flower) is one of the most beautiful prayers that I have come across. I recite this prayer daily specially for the priests known to our family, for our Holy Father, his Bishops and for those missionary priests around the world.
O Jesus, eternal Priest,
keep Your priests within the shelter of
Your Sacred Heart,
where none may touch them.
Keep unstained their anointed hands,
which daily touch Your Sacred Body.
Keep unsullied their lips,
daily purpled with Your Precious Blood.
Keep pure and unearthly their hearts,
sealed with the sublime mark
of the priesthood.
Let Your holy love surround them and
shield them from the world's contagion.
Bless their labours with abundant fruit
and may the souls to whom they
minister be their joy and
consolation here and in
Heaven their beautiful and
everlasting crown. Amen.
Mary Help of Christians, Mother of Priests - Pray for us.
Priests and religious, although are called by God to serve in a special way, they are like us, 'human'. They are made of the same flesh and blood and can have the same likings similar to us. However, through God's grace they are able to dedicate their worldly likings towards God.
Some people do not understand how consecrated people could live a life
of chastity, and think that it is 'ab-normal'. Those who know what it
means to be called, and what it means to give yourself joyfully to God,
know that these consecrated humans are not 'ab-normal', but
Yet there are some priests and religious who slip off from their daily prayer life, or do not have anyone to pray for them. These religious lack the protection from worldly temptations. They can gradually stray away into looking for self-recognition, power, money and even temptations of the flesh. Unfortunately I have seen some of the most talented priests fall into such temptations. The evil one then has won its biggest prize.
Destroying priestly, religious or married life is the biggest win for the enemy. These poor human beings then get dragged into the depths of destruction.
This is where we come in. It is a compassionate deed to pray for our priests and religious who have bigger struggles with worldly passions. They need our prayers so desperately. Our Lady in most of her apparitions such as Lourdes, Fatima and Medjugorge requested that we pray in a special way for our priests and religious. She wanted some of the visionaries to make it their mission.
Most parents know that we have a 'duty-of-care' towards young children. Similarly, we need to make it a 'duty of care' to pray for priests, religious and our Holy Father.
Your commitment to pray for priests and religious, I understand is more a charitable act and will be rewarded a thousandfold.
Have you heard of
Spiritual Motherhood where you can adopt a
priest or religious spiritually and pray for them during your whole life? Not just one, but you can adopt many spiritual daughters and sons. I am sure that there is Spiritual Fatherhood too.
