Mary Mother of Jesus? Why do Catholics Honour Mary?

How does Mary Mother of Jesus become our mother? Why do Catholics honour Mary and ask her to pray for us?

Have you been asked these questions? Does your children know, why Mary Mother of Jesus is very special?

Today is the 8th of September, the day the church celebrates Mary’s birthday. What a co-incidence that I happen to write about Mary on her birthday? I ask Jesus himself to guide me in this sharing, so you too would love and honour Mary as much as Jesus did.

When I was young, I asked my mother, “why do other Christian denominations disregard Mary as Mother of God”?

My mom sat me by her side and read me a story from the Bible – The Wedding at Cana! Click to read this story from the Gospel of John Chapter 2 verses 1-12.

This was the first sign or first miracle of Jesus. It was only Mary Mother of Jesus who knew that her son was Christ – and that her son could help them.

Although Jesus said, ‘woman my time hasn’t yet come’, Mary yet knew that her son would not disregard her request. She goes on to tell the servants "do whatever he asks of you". The first miracle of Jesus is carried out on Mary’s request.

My mom’s story stayed in my mind, and my love for Mary grew even more. I wondered that if we love our mothers the way we do, how much more would Jesus love his mother?

As in the story above, even today Mary through all her apparitions around the world leads us to Jesus, and requests us to do whatever Jesus asks of us. Why do people have to disrespect her, when Mary’s only aim is to lead us to Jesus? Even through the Rosary Prayer, Mary leads us to Jesus, by reflecting upon the beautiful mysteries of Jesus' life.

We therefore, can confidently teach our children to ask Mary to pray for us. We believe that Jesus is God and therefore, Mary is the 'Mother of God' as in the beautiful Hail Mary Prayer.

Jesus Hands over His Mother to us

When Jesus was on the cross, he asked his friend to take Mary as his mother and for His mother to accept His friend as her son (the Gospel of John chapter 19 verses 25-27). This request from Jesus conveys two messages.

1. Jesus wants us, his friends to take His mother as ‘Our Mother’.

2. He also showed us, how much he cared for his mother, because he did not want to leave her by herself.

If Jesus loved his mother – the mother who brought Jesus to the world, the mother who bore the pain watching her son being scourged and crucified; why shouldn’t we honour this loving Mother?

We can be assured that Mary is always praying for us.

I feel that we are very blessed to have Mary Mother of Jesus intercede on behalf of us. For me, she is my mother and I call her by the name – ‘JEECHI MAMA’, meaning Jesus’ mama.

My love for Mary grew over the years. It is Mary who brought me more close to Jesus. When I want to spend quiet time with Jesus, I ask Mary to hold my hands and together with St. Joseph, take me to their son. I ask Mary to keep praying that I will not be distracted during this special time with Jesus.

Mary has never let me down. I pray for all those who are reading this article, that you too will be guided by Mary Mother of Jesus. I pray that Mary will help you perfect your love for Jesus.

The Story about the Wedding at Cana
Gospel of John Chapter 2 verses 1-12

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come’.

His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you’.

Now standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water’. And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, ‘Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward’.

So they took it. ‘When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.’

Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
