Jesus the Healer could have been a common way that people referred to our Lord during his life time. We see in many places of the Bible, that crowds rushed towards Jesus for healing.
One could only imagine how they gathered family and friends when Jesus was passing through their towns.
The Gospel of Luke chapter 6:17 states,
“.. he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came forth from him and healed them all.”
Did Jesus the Healer collect money for his healing service?
NO, Jesus healed people because he felt sorry about their suffering. Jesus was a compassionate God. The Gospel of Matthew chapter 9:35 states;
“... Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and infirmity. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
We should be careful therefore, not to follow false preaches who claim to heal in the name of Jesus. You will soon find out that they do so with an ulterior motive to gain ten percent of your income. Jesus did not collect money for his healing. Jesus healed people through compassion and love.
Where could I find Jesus the Healer today?
When I want to experience the healing touch of Jesus, I know that the best place to find Jesus is in the Holy Eucharist. Every Catholic Church in the world has Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. You can also find Jesus during the breaking of bread at Holy Mass celebrated by every Catholic priest.
How can we or why should we believe that Jesus lives in the Holy Eucharist?
Because Jesus said so and we know that the Word of God is true and alive. The Gospel of Luke Chapter 22:19-20 states;
He took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me”.
And likewise the cup after supper, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood”.
In the Gospel of John Chapter 6:54 and 56 Jesus said,
"He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him."
How can you pray for healing? Would Jesus the Healer heal everybody who is sick?
Jesus would heal everybody who have faith and would ask or take some action. It is no point in having faith if you don’t ask and it is no point in asking, if you don’t have faith. You need to have both. This is clear in the Bible, where people go with faith to touch Jesus.
The Gospel of Mark 5: 25-34 states, “... there was a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, and ... She had heard the reports about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I shall be made well.” And immediately the haemorrhage ceased; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And ...... told him the whole truth. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
This shows that we have to pray with faith for healing. You can now teach your children to pray with faith.
Would Jesus the Healer extend His healing power through priests and lay ministers?
Yes. According to the Gospel of John 14:12-14 Jesus said,
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father.”
Why did Jesus heal the sick and continue the healing ministry even today?
Because Jesus loves us and wants us to know that God the Father loves us. God sent Jesus to the world so that we may grow in faith and know that we are loved by God. God is indeed a loving Father and wants us to come to Him, so he can make our burdens light.
