Most people today are looking for healing. Whether it is healing of bodily ailments, emotional ailments or spiritual ailments, all these can be a burden on us.
Jesus, during his life time, healed people from all kinds of disease – body, mind and soul. People saw Jesus as a miracle worker. Even today, people come to Jesus looking for a miracle healing.
If you are expecting a miracle, through the healing prayer, following are a few factors that you first need to consider.
One factor is the human element. An action of faith is needed by us.
The Bible clearly shows this in the Gospel of Mark 2:3-5
And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, “My son; your sins are forgiven.”
The human action of faith was, the group of men carrying the paralytic to the house and taking the trouble to lower him through the roof towards Jesus. They did not give up, just because the house was crowded and unable to get close.
It is not just the sick person, but others, such as relatives, friends and church communities also could pray for one’s healing. Jesus first saw their faith and only then uses his divine power to heal.
The divine power of Jesus which causes the miracle healing, comes only after the human desire and action of faith.
Jesus’ healing is wholesome. Jesus heals not only your body, but also your soul. Hence the words “Your sins are forgiven”.
Our ability to forgive others is another important factor before we say the healing prayer.
In order to pray for emotional healing and spiritual healing, it is important that we forgive those who hurt us. Jesus emphasises this in the Gospel of Mark 11:24-26
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against any one; so that your father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
In order to experience spiritual healing or inner peace, forgiveness is essential.
I only could say this through personal experience. Looking at the current blessings I have with a beautiful family, one would not believe the emotional sufferings that I had been through in my life. Yet again they are nothing compared to Jesus’ sufferings.
As human beings, we feel that our own hurts, rejections and betrayals are unbearable. The only way I was able to free myself from those past hurts was, to forgive them who hurt me. When it is your family, it is even worse. You wonder how could someone you love so much, do such a thing.
Yet we have to remember that Jesus was betrayed and rejected by his closest friends, the Apostles whom he considered as family. In addition, the very people whom he healed on the streets, did not rescue him when he was brought for judgement by Pilot. Instead they shouted ‘crucify him’ (Gospel of Mark 15:9-13)
Who are we compared to Jesus? If someone as gentle as Jesus could be betrayed, why cannot we bear other people’s faults? If Jesus who is sinless can forgive those who hurt him, we who are sinful, should be able to forgive those who hurt us.
Forgiveness is crucial for inner healing. The ability to totally forgive, gives us a feeling of total freedom. The Healing Prayer, the miracle prayer and the Lord’s Prayer are prayers asking for this grace.
Teaching your children to forgive from a very young age, will set them on the right path to find inner peace and freedom. This may not be the case in today’s secular world. Hence the destructions caused by hatred, revenge and anger. These feelings keep people in bondage.
However, as a good Catholic parent or guardian, I am sure that you will guide your children in the right path towards inner healing and freedom.
